Junior Varsity Buccaneers Clinch District Championship
The JV Buccaneers finished their season Thursday night, November 8, 2007, with a 48-18 win over the Hardin Hornets. Andrew Edgerly, Eric Hart, and Hank Jones all had two touchdowns and Tye LeBlanc added one. Austen Gilfillian, and Jesse Luckey both had key receptions that helped the Bucs keep drives alive in the first half. The offensive line did a nice job making adjustments, and we were able to keep the Hornets out of the backfield allowing the backs to move the ball. The defense stepped up and made stops when they needed to. Great team effort by the Bucs. The win was for the district championship and improved their record to 8-1. Congratulations to these young men on a sensational season.
Junior Varsity Football Beats the Kountze Lions

The JV got back on track Thursday night, November 1, 2007, with a 33-6 victory over Kountze at Buccaneer Stadium. Hank Jones would score on EC’s second offensive possession and Joe Martinez would add the PAT to give the Bucs an early 7-0 advantage. The defense would then cause Kountze to punt and a nice return by Adam Davis gave the offense the ball with great field position. Eric Hart would then help lead the Bucs to the end zone with three straight runs behind some nice blocking by the offensive line. Hart scored on a one yard run and Martinez would add another PAT to make it 14-0 early in the second quarter. Once again the defense would force the Lions to go backwards and punt the ball away. Jones would connect with Austen Gilfillian on a touchdown pass to make the score 20-0 after a failed PAT. The Lions only score came on the next drive on a couple of long pass plays, but the defense stuffed them on the two-point conversion bringing the score to 20-6 at half time.

The second half was much of the same. EC stopped the Lions on their first possession, and then on the Buc’s first offensive play, Andrew Edgerly would take the pitch 68 yards around the right side for another Buccaneer touchdown. Martinez’s kick was good this time to boost the score to 27-6. The defense would continue to make stops and Davis would add a touchdown run later in the third quarter, but the PAT was blocked, leaving the score 33-6.

Jordan Benson had a great game on both sides of the ball, making some key tackles on defense. Kyler Weisse, Dylan McKenzie and the rest of the offensive line did a nice job as well. Overall it was a great team effort by the JV to bounce back from last week’s set back at Buna to improve their record to 7-1.

The JV Bucs look to close out their season with a victory next Thursday, November 8 in Hardin at 6:00 p.m.

Junior Varsity Continues to Roll and Remains Undefeated

The junior varsity football team defeated Anahuac Thursday night, October 18, 2007, by the score of 28-8. The first half was a back and forth battle. The Bucs scored on their first offensive series when Andrew Edgerly took the pitch and ran in for the score. Joe Martinez added the PAT to make it 7-0. Anahuac would then break a long run down inside the ten-yard line, but the defense stepped up making Anahuac turn the ball over on downs. The offense stalled out for a couple of series but capitalized on another big defensive stand inside Anahuac’s 30. Eric Hart powered in for a two-yard touchdown run early in the 2nd quarter. After another Martinez PAT, the score was 14-0. Anahuac busted a big run on the next series and added a two-point conversion to make the score 14-8.  Right before half-time James Green made a highlight reel, one-handed interception to prevent the Panther’s from picking up another score.

On the opening drive of the second half, Edgerly would explode for a long run and turned a third down and 7 yards to go into a 1st and 10 deep into Panther’s territory. After a big run from Adam Davis to get inside the 10, Edgerly would take the pitch from Hank Jones and scamper in for his second score. With a failed two-point conversion, the score was 20-8. EC’s defense continued to stand strong and didn’t allow Anahauc another score. Eric Hart would add another touchdown run in the third quarter. EC once again went for two, but converted this time on a pass from Jones to Austen Gilfillian who made a great catch just inside the back of the end zone.  This brought the score to 28-8 which would be the final score.

The win moves the JV Bucs’ season record to 6-0. Next up for the JV is Buna next Thursday, October 25 in Buna at 6 p.m.

JV Football Obliterates the Warren Warriors

The junior varsity Buccaneer football team traveled to Warren Thursday night to take on the Warriors. The Bucs took control early forcing Warren to turn the ball over on downs after a great fourth-down stand. The offense didn’t waste any time; the Bucs would score on their second offensive play with Andrew Edgerly running, spinning, and breaking tackles for about a 50-yard touchdown run. Joe Martinez added the PAT to make it 7-0 EC. It was downhill for the Warriors after that. The defense was stellar all night adding a safety during the 2nd quarter, and the offense executed precisely with Hank Jones leading the way at quarterback. Adam Davis returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown as well as adding another TD later on. Eric Hart, Tye Leblanc, also added touchdowns for the Bucs, and Edgerly scored another as well. Overall, Martinez was 4 of 5 in his PATs. The win sets the JV’s record at 5-0. Their next game is Thursday, October, 18 at home versus Anahuac. Final score was EC 42 Warren 6.

JV Football Beats Hardin-Jefferson's Hawks

The JV traveled to Sour Lake Thursday night to take on the Hawks of Hardin-Jefferson. The Bucs moved the ball during the first half only to have their drives stalled by two turnovers and one turnover on downs. In the second quarter, Trey Simon slipped through the punt formation of the Hawks and blocked the punt, then scooped it up and ran it in for the touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed, and the Bucs took a 6-0 lead. Later that quarter HJ would get on the board with a long pass for a touchdown and added the PAT for a 7-6 lead at the half.

The Bucs scored on the first drive of the second half with a pass from Adam Davis to Andrew Edgerly for a 4th down conversion. Davis would also run the ball in for the 2-point conversion for a 14-7 lead. The defense would stuff the Hawks the rest of the way and Jacoby Carrington would add a touchdown run to bring the final score to 20-7. Overall it was a great effort by the Bucs. The defense never gave up and made up for a few mistakes that the offense made; their persistence paid off. The win improves the JV’s record to 3-0.

Junior Varsity Football Wins Against the Orangefield Bobcats

The JV defeated Orangefield 14-8 scoring the go ahead touchdown with just 43 seconds remaining in the game. Hank Jones scored in the second quarter on a two-yard run to put the Bucs up 6-0 after a failed two-point conversion. In the third quarter, Orangefield would pick up a fumble on their own one yard line and return it 99 yards for the score. The Bobcats added the two-point conversion to go up 8-6. The Bucs got the ball back with about 2 minutes remaining and marched down the field with a touchdown pass from Hank Jones to Adam Davis to take the lead. Andrew Edgerly lead the way making considerable contributions on both sides of the ball.

The JV plays next Thursday at home against Hamshire-Fannett at 6 p.m.
