MY CAREER

By Willa Tree

Nature of Job

I am an interior designer. An interior designer has a desire to create.  Interior designers specialize in the design of homes or office buildings.  They plan the space and furnish the inside of homes, buildings, retail locations, hospitals, hotel, theaters, etc.  They can also plan the interiors for remodeling.

Most interior designers specialize.  Some concentrate on home designs and others specialize even more. Some focus on certain rooms such as kitchens and baths. All designers develop a new design or change an existing one.

Interior designers also design lighting and architectural details such as built-ins, cabinets, and select furniture, floor and window treatments, help determine colors.  Interior designers also must meeting building codes and all federal, state and local laws.

Employability/Job Future

Three out of 10 designers are self-employed.  Self-employed designers tend to work longer hours.  Some designers work for companies.   Creativity is most important in the design field.

Skills/Training/Education

Most designers need a bachelor degree and a master’s degree gives you an advantage.  Creativity is the most crucial aspect.

Designers prepare sketches to illustrate the design.  Most designers draw detailed drawings by hand or with the aid of a computer.  Computer-aided design (CAD) tools are used more and more because it is easier to use and flexible in that it can be changed.  Use of a computer and training with CAD tools is essential.

Designers have to meet the needs of their client. They have to think about what the room design will be used for.  Designers must research things such as design size, characteristics, shape, weight, color, materials, cost, ease of use, and more.

Earnings

I earn $26,000 per year.  Beginning interior designer earn $20,000.  Wages also depend on whether the designer is self employed or works for a business.

Job Outlook

The job outlook is better in large cities such as Houston and Dallas.
