The
Box Tops for Education program is being used in order to earn money
for the Accelerated Reader program. Parents, students, and community
members can simply clip out the coupons, which can be found on
hundreds of products, and send them to school. Box Top coupons
should be turned into Mrs. Melissa Long at the intermediate campus
and/or the school office at the junior high campus. |

Intermediate Students Win Soil
and Water Conservation Contest |
 |
Two EC Intermediate students
placed first and second in the
Trinity Bay Soil & Water
Conservation District's "Water
is Life" poster contest. Cameron Simon
won 2nd and another EC student
won 1st place. The top three winners
were awarded $100, $75, and $50
savings bonds. They are
pictured, at left, with Mr.
James Earl Weaver from the TBCD
Board of Directors.

of conservation, emphasis of the
theme, artistic work, and
neatness. |

Students
Attend Lamar University Baseball
Game |

All junior high and intermediate
students who reached both
accelerated math and reading
goals for the fourth six weeks
earned the opportunity to attend
a Lamar University baseball game
on Wednesday, April 16. The
Cardinals hosted the Longhorns
from San Antonio and won the
contest 2-1.

NJHS takes Field
Trip to San Antonio |
|
On March 26,
2008, the National Junior Honor
Society traveled to San Antonio,
where they toured the Ripley’s
Believe It or Not! Museum, ate at
Rio Rio’s on the River Walk, and
watched the San Antonio Spurs beat
the Los Angeles Clippers. East
Chambers County Bank sponsored the
tickets to the Spurs/Clippers game.
At the game, students received cheer
sticks and a poster. On Thursday,
March 27, students watched the Alamo
IMAX (depicting the Battle of the
Alamo) at the River Center IMAX and
then toured the Alamo. Sponsors are
Cheryl Williams and Melissa Long.
Parents who attended included: Cathy and Chuck
Reddell, Nicole and Kelley Touchet,
Melissa and Mitchell Long, Shelley
and Frank Broussard, Lisa Franzen,
and Angela Johnson. Ms. Rainey, JH
Principal also attended.

Junior
High Band Earns First Division One
Rating in School History |
 |
The East Chambers Junior High Band traveled to
Port Neches–Groves High School in
Port Neches to
compete in the UIL Band Concert and
Sight reading Contest on Wednesday,
April 2.
The band
received a 1st division “Superior”
rating in Concert and a 2nd division
“excellent” rating in Sight Reading.
This is the first time the junior
high band has won a 1st division at UIL
in the history of the school.

Members Compete at UIL
Solo-Ensemble Contest |

Six members of the Junior
High/Intermediate Band traveled
to Lumberton on Friday, February
8, 2008, to compete in the UIL
Solo-Ensemble Contest and
received 1st division ratings
from the judges. This is the
first time EC Junior High
students have won in over ten
years, and the first time ever
that 6th graders have won. They
are, Emily Payne, Mary
Potter, Hugo Martinez,
Megan Hinton, Kyle
McCrary, and Gage
Gonzalez. |

Harlem
Globetrotter Visits EC JH/INT
Students |

Harlem Globetrotter and Houston
native, "Hot Shot" Branch,
visited East Chambers Junior
High and Intermediate school on
Friday, February 1, 2008.
He spoke to students about the
team’s “C.H.E.E.R. for
Character” program, which was
designed with assistance from
the U.S. Department of Education
and the President’s Council on
Physical Fitness and Sports. The
interactive program focuses on
the following character traits:
Cooperation, Healthy Mind &
Body, Effort, Enthusiasm, and
Responsibility.During the school
visit, "Hot Shot" demonstrated
the Globetrotters’ signature
ball handling skills into a
motivational presentation.

In addition, students were
challenged to make and keep a
commitment to regular physical
activity and to take the President’s
Challenge to lead a more active
lifestyle.

Globetrotters are bringing their
2008 “Magic As Ever” World Tour to
Beaumont on Sunday, February 10, at
the Montagne Center at 2:00 p.m. |

East Chambers Wins
24-2A One-Act Play Competition -

On January 23, 2008, East
Chambers Junior High and
Intermediate School competed in
the 24-2A One-Act Play Festival
of Plays. East Chambers
performed
The Wonder Hat
by Kenneth S. Goodman and Ben
Hecht. Other schools competing
were Buna Junior High, Kountze
Middle School, Warren Junior
High, and Deweyville Middle
School.
Upon completion of all
performances, East Chambers was
awarded first place play with
several individual honors.
Receiving Best Actress and a
plaque was
Zoë Zbranek.
In the All-Star Cast division,
both
Jared Matlock
and
Jaxon Vanya
received medals.

In
addition,
Sadie
Long
received an Honorable Mention
All-Star Cast medal along with the
ensemble of mimes which consisted of
Ariana Ashworth,
Emily
Neuman,
and
Mattie East.
Rounding out the cast was
Micah
Frugia.
In the Technical Best Crew division,
Emily
McKnight
was awarded for her work on the
play. Other crew members were
Amy
Harrington
and
Kaitlyn Bennett.

A school and public performance was given, Friday, January
25, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. in the high
school auditorium. |

Houston
Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest Results |
|
On January 10, 2008, the Houston
Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art
Program held its regional art
contest at Reliant Center. East
Chambers Intermediate and Junior
High students entered a total of 84
drawings that depicted the western
heritage of our state.
This art program currently boasts
competition in more than 95 school
districts and 50 private or
parochial schools in Texas in the
Houston area. Each year,
approximately 300,000 Pre-K through
12th grade students participate in
the program, which showcases the
culture, history, and heritage of
the west.
All artwork at each show receives a
ribbon. From each show the judges
will select one Best of Show piece
in each of the elementary, junior
high/middle school, and high school
levels. They may also select up to
four Gold Medal pieces from each
level. These selected pieces of
artwork will be brought to the
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for
display in the Hayloft
Gallery. Students who received a
Best of Show or Gold Medal ribbon
are offered one of ninety positions
available at the Glassell Junior
School of Art in Houston, through an
application process that is based on
the student’s academic,
extracurricular, and artistic
success.
These students’ artwork will now
proceed to the next level, the Grand
Prix judging. Students will not know
the final outcome of the judging
until the Awards’ Presentation at
Reliant Center in the Main Arena on
March 8, 2008, at 9:00 am. The
Hayloft Gallery will be open to the
public March 3 – March 22 and is
located in Reliant Center. All
students who placed and received a
ribbon for first, second, or third
for their artwork will be posted at
a later date on Mrs. Dudley's school
web page.

Junior
High/Intermediate Students Win
District UIL Academic Meet |
|
The Junior High and
Intermediate (6th grade) District
UIL Academic Meet was hosted at East
Chambers on Monday and Tuesday,
November 12 and 13. Sixth,
seventh, and eighth grade students
from Anahuac, Buna, Deweyville, East
Chambers, Hardin, Kountze and Warren
participated.
East Chambers won the overall meet
with 505 points, followed by Buna
452.5, Anahuac 309, Warren 251.5,
Kountze 166, Hardin 146, and
Deweyville 109. East Chambers also
won overall for 7th and 8th grades
and came in second in 6th grade.

Seventh Graders Qualify for Duke
University Honors |
|
Ten East Chambers Junior High
students have qualified for
participation in the Duke
University Identification
Program also known as TIP. This
is the 28th year Duke University
has given select seventh graders
this opportunity with qualifying
scores on the TAKS. State and
National Honors are available
for those who
choose to participate further.
