Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest Results

On January 10, 2008, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program held its regional art contest at Reliant Center. East Chambers Intermediate and Junior High students entered a total of 84 drawings that depicted the western heritage of our state.

This art program currently boasts competition in more than 95 school districts and 50 private or parochial schools in Texas in the Houston area. Each year, approximately 300,000 Pre-K through 12th grade students participate in the program, which showcases the culture, history, and heritage of the west.

All artwork at each show receives a ribbon. From each show the judges will select one Best of Show piece in each of the elementary, junior high/middle school, and high school levels. They may also select up to four Gold Medal pieces from each level. These selected pieces of artwork will be brought to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for display in the Hayloft Gallery. Students who received a Best of Show or Gold Medal ribbon are offered one of ninety positions available at the Glassell Junior School of Art in Houston, through an application process that is based on the student’s academic, extracurricular, and artistic success.

These students’ artwork will now proceed to the next level, the Grand Prix judging. Students will not know the final outcome of the judging until the Awards’ Presentation at Reliant Center in the Main Arena on March 8, 2008, at 9:00 am. The Hayloft Gallery will be open to the public March 3 – March 22 and is located in Reliant Center.
