The
Accelerated Reader and STAR programs are used in conjunction
to promote students to read independently as well as to
guide students in choosing the appropriate reading
materials. The STAR Reading program provides each student
with a Zone of Proximal Development, which is the reading
range that will be best for the student to practice within
to promote reading growth. Teachers use the ZPD's for each
student to help guide him or her to books with the
appropriate readability levels. Additionally, teachers are
able to continually monitor student progress through the
Accelerated Reading program reports to ensure that students
have the optimal reading challenge without frustration.
ECISD
expanded the Accelerated Reading program, during the
2007-2008 school year, by making over 100,000 quizzes
available to students. This increase allows students a vast
opportunity for reading selections from school, the public
library, and home that are a part of the accelerated reading
program. The expansion has provided students with an almost
endless choice of literature in their individual practice
reading zones that will also be of interest to them.
Parents
should still check with their child's reading teacher to be
sure of their child's reading level. In addition, parents
can check online to determine if a book has a quiz
associated with it. Information on how to determine if a
book has a quiz can be found at this
link.
The primary goals include
accelerated mathematics learning, motivation for student
success, individualized instruction and practice,
improvement on standardized tests, and effective classroom
management.
Practice
sheets are printed with objectives for the students to work
on. Once they have mastered the practice on five objectives,
students take an individualized test which shows mastery of
the objectives. The computer scans, grades, and indicates
the level of mastery.
The seventh
grade has approximately 190 objectives to master, and
seventh grade students are required to take at least one
test every two weeks.
